Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sunil Sharma on Tuesday criticised the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government for, what he alleged, “having failed to realise on ground the project related to construction of individual bunkers approved by the Centre.”
“The individual bunkers, which were approved by the central government after Operation Sindoor, have not been constructed by the Omar Abdullah-government. The elected government despite its huge mandate has failed to deliver good governance as it is focussed only on corruption,” alleged LoP, who was leading a senior BJP delegation on a mass public outreach programme ‘Jan Samvad’ in Poonch and Rajouri.
Following his meeting with delegations at Dak bungalow Poonch, Sharma stated that he listened to victimised and ignored sections of society as part of BJP’s district wide outreach programme.
“We’ve noted their genuine issues including delay in Panchayat elections, demands of daily wagers, rampant corruption, need for individual bunkers in border areas post Operation Sindoor and meagre stipend of intern doctors. We will become the voice of these poor and deprived people in the upcoming assembly session and force this failed NC government to act,” LoP asserted.
He described the problems of unemployed youth, daily wagers and early conduct of Panchayat polls as the burning issues in the current scenario.
“Previously during our (BJP’s) post ‘Operation Sindoor’ visit to border districts, there were demands of immediate compensation, job and bunkers. I, myself, raised these demands with the Union Home Minister. He (Home Minister) not only agreed to these demands but even personally reviewed progress on compensation and handed over job letters during his visit. However, the construction of bunkers was to be realised on the ground by the current elected government in J&K. We had constructed community bunkers but the demands were specific for individual bunkers. However, this (elected) government failed to do so although they (individual bunkers) were approved by the Centre,” LoP maintained. He assured that the issue would again be raised with the central government.
BJP’s outreach programme was aimed at taking its campaign against, what the LoP and other party leaders described as, “the failures, misgovernance and anti-people policies of the National Conference-led government” directly to the people.
Sunil Sharma was accompanied by senior leader Vibodh Gupta, district presidents Gurdeep Singh Khalsa and Dev Raj Sharma, former MLC Pardeep Sharma and other senior BJP functionaries.
During the outreach, the BJP delegation interacted with several public delegations, listened to their grievances and took detailed feedback on issues confronting the people, particularly relating to development, basic public services, employment and welfare.
Sunil Sharma said the programme marked the beginning of an extensive grassroots campaign by the BJP to expose the widening gap between the tall promises of the NC before elections and its performance in government.
“The NC came to power making big promises to the people, but today the public is asking where is the promised development, where are the jobs and where is the relief in their day-to-day problems? The growing public dissatisfaction is a direct reflection of the government’s failure to deliver,” Sunil Sharma maintained.
He claimed that instead of addressing people’s genuine concerns, the NC government failed to provide effective, accountable and responsive governance. “The BJP will not allow the government to hide its failures behind political rhetoric. We will go to every district, every constituency and every section of society, listen to the people and bring their issues before the government and the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he asserted.
Sunil Sharma said the grievances raised in Poonch and Rajouri clearly demonstrated that people were increasingly questioning the functioning and priorities of the NC government.
“The BJP is not sitting in offices and making political statements. Our leaders and workers are reaching the people, hearing them directly and standing with them in their hour of need. The people’s voice will become the BJP’s strongest weapon against NC’s misgovernance,” he said.
LoP further announced that the public outreach would be expanded across Jammu and Kashmir, with senior BJP leaders undertaking visits to different administrative districts to highlight the government’s failures and ensure that genuine public issues are raised at every appropriate forum.
“The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve performance, accountability and development—not excuses and empty promises. The BJP will remain the strongest voice of the people and will continue to hold the NC government accountable,” Sunil Sharma said.
