Sopore, Sep 12: A tragic incident occurred at Vijibal Doabgah area of Sopore in north Kashmir after a man drowned in the River Jhelum while reportedly trying to drag his boat towards the riverbank for repair on Saturday.

According to reports, the man was engaged in taking the boat towards the bank when he accidentally fell into the river. The incident caused panic in the area, following which locals immediately rushed to the spot and informed the concerned authorities about the mishap.

Soon after receiving the information, a joint rescue operation was launched by personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police and local residents. The rescuers began searching the river in an effort to trace the man, while locals also extended their assistance during the operation.

After sustained efforts and an extensive search, the rescue teams managed to retrieve the body of the man from the River Jhelum. The deceased was identified as Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Sumji (60), S/o Sonaullah Sumji, a resident of Sher Colony, Sopore.

Following the recovery, police took the body into custody and completed the required medico-legal formalities. After completion of the formalities, the body was handed over to the bereaved family for the last rites.

The incident has left the family and residents of Sher Colony in deep shock and grief. Local residents appreciated the timely efforts of the SDRF, police personnel and those who participated in the rescue operation.
