Two bodies, including those of a girl and a youth, were recovered from a power canal in the Thune area of Kangan in Ganderbal district on Monday, officials said.
According to officials, the duo had reportedly drowned in the canal earlier in the day, following which a rescue operation was launched in the area.
Teams from the police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local volunteers rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident and began an extensive search operation along the canal.
After several hours of searching, rescuers located and recovered both bodies from the water.
The bodies were subsequently shifted to Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Kangan for medico-legal formalities. They were later handed over to the respective families.
Police have initiated proceedings in connection with the incident, while further investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the drowning.
