NEW DELHI, OCT 6: The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday signed a Rs 661.50 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) for the procurement of BrahMos Fire Control Systems and Launchers for Indian Navy ships, strengthening the maritime strike capabilities of frontline warships and advancing the country’s push for indigenous defence technology.
The contract was signed under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, marking another significant procurement decision focused on strengthening domestic defence manufacturing and reducing dependence on imported military systems.
The project carries a minimum 68 per cent indigenous content, providing opportunities for greater participation by Indian defence industries, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). According to the Ministry of Defence, the programme is expected to generate employment over a period of three years while contributing to the expansion of India’s domestic defence-industrial ecosystem.
The BrahMos system is already deployed aboard several frontline Indian Navy warships and serves as the Navy’s primary surface-to-surface missile system for maritime strike operations. The system is designed to engage both land and sea-based targets from extended ranges with high precision and at supersonic speeds.
The procurement of additional fire control systems and launchers is expected to support the Navy’s ability to equip and maintain its warships with advanced indigenous strike capabilities, strengthening the operational preparedness of the maritime force.
The contract also assumes significance in the context of India’s continuing efforts to indigenise critical military technologies and expand domestic capacity for the design, production and integration of sophisticated weapon systems. Greater indigenous participation is expected to strengthen supply-chain resilience and create opportunities for Indian manufacturers to contribute to advanced defence programmes.
The Ministry said the project will further bolster India’s maritime security architecture and defence capabilities, while marking another step in the ongoing drive to develop self-reliant defence manufacturing capabilities.
The agreement with BrahMos Aerospace follows a broader procurement approach under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, which prioritises indigenously designed, developed and manufactured defence equipment and seeks to increase the domestic value addition in major military acquisitions.
