The notification, approved by the VC KU on the recommendations of a committee constituted under Notice No. KU-ATC-2026-979 dated August 4, 2026, applies to existing and future cases involving administrative assignments held by such professors.

Under the new framework, professors who have been approved for continuation in service beyond 62 years and are already holding administrative or academic positions can continue in those roles until the completion of their prescribed tenure.

The positions covered include Head of Department, Dean of a School, Dean Academic Affairs, Dean Research, Dean College Development Council and Dean Students’ Welfare, besides other tenure-based administrative assignments.

However, the continuation of these professors in administrative positions will remain subject to their Annual Performance Review (APR) under the government policy governing service beyond 62 years.

As per the notification, the competent authority can discontinue an administrative assignment before the expiry of its tenure if the professor receives an adverse performance review or is found to have performed unsatisfactorily.

In a separate provision, the professors serving beyond 62 years should ordinarily not be considered for fresh administrative or tenure-based appointments during their extended period of service.

The restriction covers appointments as heads of departments, Deans of academic affairs, research and college development, Dean Students’ Welfare and other comparable administrative positions.

As per the KU notification, such professors will not ordinarily be considered for nomination as Deans of Schools.

However, the VC KU has been vested with discretionary powers to make exceptions in such cases where academic requirements or institutional interests warrant it.

“The Vice-Chancellor may, in his/her discretion, consider such nomination on a case-to-case basis, having due regard to the academic requirements of the School and the overall interests of the University,” it reads.

The notification shall come into force with immediate effect and shall govern all existing and future cases relating to the assignment and continuation of administrative positions in respect of Professors serving under the enhanced age of superannuation, unless otherwise modified by any subsequent government order, statute, regulation, or decision of the competent authority.
