KATRA, OCT 26: In a continued crackdown on drug trafficking, Katra Police recovered 8.7 grams of heroin (chitta) from two persons, including a man and a woman, during naka checking at Balni in Katra, Reasi district. The recovery led to the registration of a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, with further investigation underway to trace the source and supply network associated with the seized contraband.

According to police, the recovery was made on October 24 at around 8:20 pm when a police team from Police Station Katra was conducting routine naka checking at Balni. During the operation, the personnel intercepted two persons who were approaching the naka point on foot.

During their checking and frisking, police recovered 4.5 grams of heroin from Sunil Kumar, son of Yash Paul, a resident of Sughar, PO Khail, Udhampur district, while 4.2 grams of heroin was recovered from Rekha Devi, wife of Subash Chander, a resident of Kundrian near Shiv Ram Hotel, Katra, Reasi district. The combined recovery amounted to 8.7 grams of the suspected narcotic substance.

Following the recovery, FIR Number 333/2026 under Sections 8, 21, 22 and 29 of the NDPS Act was registered at Police Station Katra, and further investigation was initiated in the case.

Police said the investigation would focus on establishing the backward and forward linkages of the accused to determine the source of the contraband, identify its intended recipients and ascertain whether other individuals were involved in the alleged drug trafficking activity. Investigators are also expected to examine possible connections with a wider supply network as part of efforts to identify those responsible for the movement and distribution of narcotic substances.

The action forms part of Reasi Police’s ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking and prevent the spread of substance abuse in the district, particularly in and around Katra, a prominent pilgrimage destination that attracts visitors from across the country.

Reasi Police reiterated its commitment to taking action against drug-related offences and urged members of the public to share credible information about drug peddling and other unlawful activities. Police also appealed for public cooperation in identifying individuals involved in the narcotics trade and strengthening efforts to protect young people from the harmful effects of drug abuse.
