JAMMU, OCT 25: In a significant recognition of her professional service, Sanjeewan Jyoti, who is presently serving as Station House Officer (SHO) of the Women Police Station, Jammu, has been nominated for an international assignment with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Her nomination marks an important milestone for Jammu and Kashmir Police, highlighting the opportunities available to police personnel from the Union Territory to contribute to international peacekeeping and security initiatives under the United Nations.

Jyoti’s nomination brings the role of women officers in law enforcement into focus, particularly their contribution to policing, community engagement and the handling of cases involving women. As SHO of the Women Police Station in Jammu, she is entrusted with responsibilities related to the supervision of police work, handling of complaints, coordination of investigations and ensuring appropriate legal action in cases falling within the station’s jurisdiction.

Women police stations play a crucial role in providing accessible avenues for women seeking assistance in cases involving domestic violence, harassment, cruelty, dowry-related offences and other forms of gender-based violence. Such responsibilities require professional competence, sensitivity, impartiality and adherence to established legal procedures.

The proposed international assignment under UNMISS would provide Jyoti an opportunity to contribute to a multinational environment where policing forms part of broader efforts to protect civilians, uphold human rights and support peace and security.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan operates in a challenging security and humanitarian environment. Its mandate includes the protection of civilians, support for the implementation of peace arrangements and the promotion of human rights. Police personnel serving with the mission work alongside international counterparts and contribute to efforts aimed at strengthening security and supporting communities affected by conflict.

Her nomination also highlights the potential for police officers serving in operational and station-level assignments to contribute to international policing initiatives. For women personnel in Jammu and Kashmir Police, the development offers an example of opportunities to expand their professional experience beyond domestic law enforcement.

The nomination is being viewed as a matter of pride for the Jammu and Kashmir Police fraternity, reflecting the international responsibilities that police personnel may undertake through United Nations assignments.

Further details regarding Jyoti’s deployment schedule, duration of service and specific responsibilities under UNMISS were not immediately available.
