Srinagar, Oct 27: From decades of electoral experience and party organisation to hard-fought constituency battles, Ali Mohammad Sagar, Saifullah Mir, Shamim Firdous, and Altaf Ahmad Wani (Kaloo) bring distinct political journeys to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s expanded cabinet.
The four National Conference (NC) leaders represent different constituencies and generations of political contests, with experience spanning legislative service, ministerial responsibilities, and grassroots representation.
As they take charge of their new portfolios, their political backgrounds offer a glimpse into the experience and electoral mandates they bring to the government’s developmental agenda.
Ali Mohammad Sagar
Ali Mohammad Sagar is a senior National Conference (NC) leader and seven-time legislator from Srinagar’s Khanyar assembly constituency.
Sagar has built his political career through repeated electoral victories, organisational responsibilities within the NC, and ministerial service in previous National Conference (NC) led governments.
His return to the cabinet marks another chapter in his decades-long political career.
Sagar did his LLB from the University of Kashmir.
His legal education preceded a political career spanning more than four decades.
Sagar’s electoral journey began in 1983, when he was first elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from Khanyar.
He subsequently won from the constituency in 1987, 1996, 2002, 2008, and 2014, before securing another victory in the 2024 Assembly election.
His electoral record spans several distinct periods in J&K’s political history, with Khanyar remaining the centre of his legislative career.
The 2024 Assembly election reaffirmed his position as the NC’s representative from the Srinagar constituency.
Sagar received 14,906 votes, defeating independent candidate Sheikh Imran, who polled 4994 votes, by a margin of 9912 votes.
Sagar has held senior organisational responsibilities in the NC and is often referred to as the party’s “crisis manager”.
In June 2014, he was appointed the party’s General Secretary, succeeding Sheikh Nazir, who had held the position since 1996.
Sagar previously served in the NC led government holding the portfolios of Works and Rural Development and Panchayati Raj.
Saifullah Mir
Saifullah Mir, a senior National Conference (NC) leader, represents the Trehgam assembly constituency of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
A four-time MLA, Mir has previously represented the neighbouringKupwara constituency for three terms.
A lawyer by profession and a former minister in the Jammu and Kashmir government, Mir returned to the Legislative Assembly in 2024 after winning the newly delineated Trehgam seat.
He was continuously elected thrice from the Kupwara assembly constituency in 1996, 2002, and 2008 as an NC candidate.
Following the delimitation of assembly constituencies, Mir contested the 2024 election from Trehgam and secured his fourth assembly victory.
In the 2024 assembly elections, he won the Trehgam constituency, polling 18,002 votes, defeating People’s Conference (PC) candidate Bashir Ahmad Dar, who polled 14,376 votes, by a margin of 3626 votes.
Mir did his LLB from the University of Kashmir in 1987.
He previously also served in the NC-led government headed by Omar Abdullah.
Mir was inducted into the ministry during a cabinet reshuffle in January 2013, alongside several other NC legislators.
Shamim Firdous
Shamim Firdous is a senior National Conference (NC) leader and a three-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from HabbaKadal constituency in central Kashmir’s Srinagar district.
She won the HabbaKadal assembly seat in 2008 and retained it in the 2014 and 2024 assembly elections.
Firdous also chaired the Jammu and Kashmir State Commission for Women, holding the status of a Minister of State.
She did her BA and LLB with Honours from the University of Kashmir in 1983.
In the 2024 assembly election, Firdous secured 12,437 votes, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ashok Kumar Bhat, who received 2899 votes, winning by a margin of 9538 votes.
Beyond her legislative career, Firdous has held responsibilities within the NC Women’s Wing.
Altaf Ahmad Wani
Altaf Ahmad Wani (Kaloo) is a National Conference (NC) leader who represents the Pahalgam assembly constituency of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
His political career is marked by an unsuccessful assembly election bid in the 2008 assembly elections, nomination in 2009 to the Legislative Council, and victories in the 2014 and 2024 Assembly elections.
His electoral defeats and wins have featured repeated contests against a political heavyweight, Rafi Ahmed Mir, in Pahalgam.
Wani won his first Assembly election in 2014, defeating Mir by a narrow margin of 904 votes in a closely contested Pahalgam race.
He secured 25,232 votes, while Mir, the PDP candidate, received 24,328 votes.
The result reversed the outcome of the 2008 election, when Mir had defeated Wani in Pahalgam.
The two politicians would face each other again in the 2024 Assembly elections, making their electoral rivalry a recurring feature of Pahalgam’s political contest.
In the 2024 assembly elections, Wani defeated Mir by a substantially larger margin of 13,756 votes, polling 26,210 votes, while Mir, contesting on the Apni Party ticket, received 12,454 votes.
Wani did his Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Islamia Institute of Technology, Bangalore, in 1995.
