Three siblings commit suicide in Maharashtra's Virar over lack of money for cancer treatment

Palghar, Oct 29: Three siblings allegedly committed suicide by consuming rat poison in Virar in Maharashtra’s Palghar district due to financial distress after one of them was detected with cancer, a police official said on Thursday.

The bodies of Kumar Mansukhlal Mehta (50), Deepak Mansukhlal Mehta (52), and Khevna Mansukhlal Mehta (48) were found in their flat in Virar’s Global City at 9:30 pm on Wednesday after neighbours alerted authorities about a foul smell, the Bolinj police station official said.

“The flat was bolted from inside. The bodies were in a highly decomposed state. Kumar Mehta was suffering from cancer and the family had plunged into depression after it could not raise funds for treatment from relatives or friends,” assistant inspector Vishnu Wadkar told PTI.

The three siblings, who stayed together, consumed rat poison as part of a suicide pact, he said.

A case of accidental death has been registered and further probe is underway, Wadkar said.
