JAMMU, SEPT 23: Security agencies have been alerted after a pigeon suspected to have crossed over from Pakistan was found in the R.S. Pura sector near the Jammu border, officials said on Wednesday.
The pigeon was reportedly found carrying a ring bearing a Pakistani mobile phone number, prompting security agencies to take note of the incident and initiate verification regarding its possible origin and how it reached the Indian side.
Officials said the pigeon was recovered from the R.S. Pura area and subsequently taken into custody for examination.
The number inscribed on the ring is being verified, while agencies are also examining whether the bird’s movement across the International Border was incidental or whether the ring has any significance.
The incident comes against the backdrop of earlier instances in which pigeons and other objects suspected to have originated from across the border have been intercepted in border areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
Such incidents have previously prompted security agencies to verify whether the birds were being used for any communication or other activity.
Authorities are checking the details associated with the Pakistani number and gathering information to establish the origin of the pigeon, the identity of anyone connected with the number and the purpose of the ring.
Officials, however, have not indicated any confirmed link between the pigeon and a security-related activity so far.
