
The population census for snow-bound areas of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and entire Ladakh Union Territory will begin from tomorrow, September 1,2026.
In the case of Jammu and Kashmir UT, this most important population enumeration phase is being launched from Dudu-Basantgarh, Udhampur. It will be the first and historic initiative to launch a census exercise from such a remote area.
In this connection, Chief Principal Census Officer (CPCO) Directorate of Census Operations Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, Amit Sharma will also address a press conference at the office of Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur at 5.30 pm on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
CPCO and Director, Census Operations (DCO), J&K and Ladakh (Director, MHA, Government of India) will visit Dudu and Basantgarh sub-divisions of district Udhampur on September 1, 2026 in connection with the formal commencement of Population Enumeration (PE) in snowbound and inaccessible areas of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir.
The visit will mark the commencement of the Population Enumeration drive in the snowbound areas, scheduled to be undertaken from September 1 to 30, 2026.
During the visit, the Chief Principal Census Officer will formally inaugurate and commence the enumeration operations at Dudu and Basantgarh, interact with the designated field officers and officials and review the preparedness for smooth conduct of the Population Enumeration exercise.
The visit will also include brief press interaction at District Headquarters before his departure for Jammu in the evening.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Udhampur, Sub Divisional Census Officer (Sub-Divisional Magistrate), Basantgarh, Dudu, District Information Officer, Udhampur and Charge Census Officers (Tehsildar) Basantgarh and Latti have been instructed to make all necessary arrangements, including security and logistics, for the visit.
The District Census Officer (Nodal Officer for Census 2027) Additional Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur along with Additional District Census Officer (District Statistics and Evaluation Officer) Udhampur will accompany CPCO Amit Sharma and act as the liaison officer for the smooth conduct of the tour programme.
