SRINAGAR, OCT 5: Jammu and Kashmir is likely to witness a shift from predominantly dry conditions to unsettled weather from Tuesday, with the Meteorological Department forecasting light rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds at scattered to many places across the Union Territory between October 6 and 10.

According to the latest weather advisory, October 5 is expected to remain mainly dry across Jammu and Kashmir. However, weather conditions are likely to deteriorate from October 6, with partly to generally cloudy skies and spells of light rain expected at scattered to many places.

The forecast indicates that higher reaches may receive light snowfall, while thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are also likely during the October 6–10 period. The change in weather comes at a crucial time for the agriculture and horticulture sectors, particularly in Kashmir, where apple harvesting and paddy-related activities are underway.

The Meteorological Department has specifically advised farmers and horticulturists to take precautionary measures for the safe storage of harvested apples and paddy during October 6 to 10. The advisory assumes added significance as rain and strong winds could affect agricultural produce lying in open or vulnerable storage areas.

After October 10, weather conditions are expected to gradually improve, with the forecast suggesting partly cloudy weather from October 11 to 15 and no major widespread precipitation indicated during this period.

The anticipated spell of rain and snowfall in higher elevations may also bring a noticeable drop in temperatures, particularly across higher reaches, while gusty winds and thunderstorms could cause temporary disruptions in outdoor activities and movement in vulnerable areas. Authorities and the public have accordingly been advised to remain alert during periods of thunderstorm and strong winds.
