GUREZ, OCT 5: The T20 Cricket Tournament organised by District Police Bandipora under the Civic Action Programme of J&K Police concluded at Gurez Stadium, bringing together 16 teams from different parts of the Gurez and Tulail areas in a competitive sporting event aimed at promoting youth engagement, community participation and positive sporting activities in the border region.
The tournament was conducted on a knockout basis, with teams competing for a place in the final. The summit clash was played between Chontiwari and Wanpora, drawing a large gathering of local residents, cricket enthusiasts and supporters who turned up at Gurez Stadium to witness the concluding encounter.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Chontiwari posted 185 runs in 19.5 overs, setting Wanpora a challenging target. Wanpora made a determined effort during the chase but finished at 169 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs, handing Chontiwari a 16-run victory and the tournament title.
The final was attended by DIG North Kashmir Range Baramulla Vinod Kumar, as the chief guest, while SSP Bandipora Ajaz Ahmed Zargar attended as the guest of honour. SDPO Gurez and other police officers were also present during the concluding ceremony.
The dignitaries presented trophies, medals, cash prizes and other awards to the winning and runner-up teams, recognising their performances throughout the tournament. The prize distribution ceremony also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the sporting spirit and participation of the teams representing different communities across Gurez and Tulail.
The tournament served as a platform for local players to showcase their cricketing talent while encouraging young people to participate in organised sports and constructive community activities. The substantial public turnout for the final reflected the strong enthusiasm for cricket among residents of the Gurez Valley.
District Police Bandipora said such initiatives under the Civic Action Programme are aimed at strengthening police-public engagement, providing youth with meaningful sporting opportunities and encouraging healthy participation in community-oriented activities. The tournament concluded with appreciation for the participating teams, organisers, officials and local residents whose support contributed to the successful conduct of the event.
