Illegal shed on flood land linked to Afzal Guru’s family demolished in Baramulla

BARAMULLA, OCT 6: Authorities on Tuesday demolished an illegally constructed shed on flood-prone land in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, reportedly built by members of the family of Mohammed Afzal Guru, who was convicted in the 2001 Parliament attack case and executed in 2013, officials said.

The demolition was carried out by a Revenue Department team headed by a magistrate following directions from senior authorities. Officials said the structure had been erected on state land without lawful authorisation, prompting the administration to initiate action under the applicable legal and revenue procedures.

According to officials, the administration has repeatedly warned residents against unauthorised construction, occupation or alteration of government and flood-prone land, stressing that such violations can obstruct land management and create additional risks in vulnerable areas.

The latest action forms part of an ongoing drive to identify and remove encroachments from state-owned and flood-prone land across the district. Officials said the administration is continuing verification of such properties and that further enforcement action is expected against unauthorised structures wherever violations are established.

The demolition was conducted under due legal procedure, officials said. Security personnel were deployed in the area as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order and ensure that the enforcement exercise was completed peacefully.

Officials maintained that the action was based on the status of the land and alleged unauthorised occupation, rather than the identity of the persons associated with the structure.

The administration has reiterated that government land and land falling within vulnerable flood zones cannot be occupied or developed without requisite permission, and warned that further encroachments detected during ongoing inspections will face action in accordance with law.
