SOPORE, OCT 24: In an effort to strengthen police-public relations and encourage responsible citizenship among young people, Sopore Police organised a debate competition on “Role of Police in Nation Building” at Government Higher Secondary School, Bomai, bringing students together to discuss the contribution of law enforcement agencies to peace, security and social development.
The programme was conducted under the jurisdiction of Police Station Bomai as part of the department’s ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between law enforcement agencies and the public, particularly the younger generation. The initiative aimed to familiarise students with the responsibilities of the police while promoting civic sense, patriotism, respect for the rule of law and community participation.
A large number of students participated enthusiastically in the competition, presenting their views on the role of J&K Police in maintaining law and order, safeguarding citizens, countering anti-national elements, assisting people in distress and preserving communal harmony. The participants also discussed the importance of peace and stability as essential conditions for the progress and development of society.
During the programme, speakers highlighted that the responsibilities of the police extend beyond enforcing the law to include public service, helping vulnerable sections of society and responding to the needs of citizens. They emphasised that effective policing depends not only on professional law enforcement but also on public cooperation, mutual trust and a shared commitment to maintaining peace.
The students were encouraged to become responsible citizens, uphold democratic and constitutional values, respect the law and contribute positively to their communities. Speakers also urged them to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in preventing unlawful activities and to serve as ambassadors of peace, harmony and responsible conduct among their peers.
The debate provided a platform for students to engage with issues of public safety, civic responsibility and the relationship between citizens and law enforcement agencies. By encouraging young people to express their perspectives on nation-building, the programme sought to develop a better understanding of the role that both institutions and individuals play in creating a peaceful and secure society.
Sopore Police reiterated its commitment to organising similar awareness programmes and youth-oriented activities in the future, with the objective of strengthening public trust, encouraging constructive engagement and building stronger ties between the police and local communities.
