ATMs could soon evolve beyond cash withdrawals and deposits, with new technology unveiled at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 enabling instant issuance of personalised RuPay cards and UPI QR codes for merchants.
Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, Sanjay Lohiya, launched the innovations at GFF 2026 in the presence of UIDAI CEO Saurabh Vijay.
The open-source Android-based ATM solution will allow customers to receive personalised RuPay debit, credit and NCMC cards directly from machines through a self-service process. Merchants will also be able to generate UPI QR codes instantly to accept digital payments.
The machines are designed to offer additional banking services, including cheque deposits, account opening and loan applications. The team demonstrated the technology at the GFF venue.
The initiative aims to transform ATMs into intelligent banking access points, reducing dependence on branches and courier-based card delivery. Banks are also exploring their deployment as Digital Banking Units in semi-urban and rural areas, as well as at airports, transit hubs, educational campuses and corporate parks.
Nine banks, including SBI, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, PNB and Airtel Payments Bank, are currently engaging with NPCI and ATM manufacturers to assess the solution.
