Srinagar, Oct 6: Automobile retail in Jammu and Kashmir recorded a strong year-on-year growth of 47.06 percent in September 2026, with total retail sales reaching 21,234 units compared to 14,439 units in September 2025, according to data shared by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) J&K.
However, the sector registered a marginal month-on-month decline of 2.5 percent, with September retail at 21,234 units against 21,788 units in August 2026.
The growth was broad-based across all major automobile categories, with three-wheelers and construction equipment recording the sharpest year-on-year increases.
Two-wheeler retail grew 50.31 percent to 11,938 units in September 2026, compared to 7,924 units in the corresponding month last year. The segment remained the largest contributor to overall automobile retail in J&K.
Three-wheeler sales recorded an 84.21 percent increase, rising to 1,750 units from 950 units in September 2025.
Commercial vehicle retail also registered strong growth of 46.41 percent, with sales increasing to 1,123 units from 767 units a year earlier.
Construction equipment recorded the highest percentage growth among the categories, surging 205 percent to 61 units in September 2026 compared to 20 units in September 2025.
Passenger vehicle retail rose 33.69 percent year-on-year to 6,067 units from 4,538 units in September 2025, indicating sustained demand for personal mobility despite the marginal month-on-month softening in overall retail.
Tractor sales increased 32.88 percent to 295 units in September 2026 against 222 units in September 2025.
Sanjay Aggarwal, Chairperson, Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) J&K, said the September performance reflected strong consumer sentiment and improving economic activity across the Union Territory.
“September 2026 achieved a growth of 47.06 percent YoY, but on a month-on-month basis there was a slight degrowth of 2.5 percent,” Aggarwal said.
He said the broad-based growth across automobile segments was particularly encouraging, pointing to the 33.69 percent growth in passenger vehicles and 50.31 percent increase in two-wheelers.
“The strong performance of three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and tractors also reflects increasing economic and business activity in the region,” he said.
Aggarwal said the automobile industry was now looking towards the upcoming festive and marriage seasons for further demand momentum, with Navratras, Dussehra, Dhanteras and Diwali expected to support vehicle purchases.
He said the festive period traditionally witnesses higher consumer spending and increased demand for personal mobility, particularly in the passenger vehicle and two-wheeler segments.
“The upcoming festive and marriage seasons are expected to bring renewed momentum to automobile retail in J&K. These periods traditionally witness increased consumer spending and higher demand for personal mobility, particularly in the Passenger Vehicle and 2-Wheeler segments,” Aggarwal said.
He added that the marriage season would be another important demand driver, particularly for passenger vehicles and two-wheelers, as families often plan vehicle purchases around weddings and other family occasions.
At the same time, he said commercial vehicles and three-wheelers could benefit from increased economic and commercial activity during the festive period.
According to Aggarwal, dealers across J&K are preparing for a potential increase in customer enquiries and showroom footfall. Attractive product offerings, financing options and festive campaigns by manufacturers and dealerships are also expected to support demand.
“We therefore remain cautiously optimistic that the combination of the festive and marriage seasons can help the industry sustain its positive YoY growth momentum and potentially offset some of the recent month-on-month softness,” he said.
