NEW DELHI, OCT 30: The Government of India has officially notified the schedule for the Census of Population 2027, with house-to-house enumeration set to commence on January 25 and continue until February 28, 2027. The notification also provides for a self-enumeration facility from January 10 to January 24, allowing citizens to submit their population-related details ahead of the door-to-door exercise.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs through the Office of the Registrar General of India on October 30, the Census will be conducted under Section 3 of the Census Act, 1948, read with Rules 6A and 6D of the Census Rules, 1990.

As per the notified timeline, the self-enumeration window will remain open for 15 days, from January 10 to January 24, 2027, after which Census officials will undertake house-to-house enumeration from January 25. The main exercise will conclude on February 28, followed by a revisional round from March 1 to March 5, 2027.

The government has fixed 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027, as the reference date for the Census, which will serve as the official benchmark for recording population-related information.

Significantly, the notified schedule will not apply, until further declaration, to the Union Territory of Ladakh, Manipur, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand. It will also exclude snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

The notification has been issued under the signature of Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner, on behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The announcement marks a major step in the preparations for Census 2027, which will facilitate the collection of updated demographic and population data across the country. The information generated through the exercise will serve as an important basis for administrative planning, policy formulation and assessment of population-related requirements.

The separate exclusion of Ladakh and several other regions from the present schedule indicates that their Census timelines will be subject to a further declaration by the government.
