Residents of Bagh-e-Islam in Old Town Baramulla have raised concern over a clogged drain running alongside a major graveyard, alleging that prolonged neglect has allowed wastewater to overflow into the burial ground.
Locals said the drain has remained blocked for a considerable period due to inadequate cleaning and maintenance. When the water level rises, they said, wastewater spills into the graveyard and reaches the graves.
“This is not merely a drainage issue. The wastewater is entering the graveyard and, at times, flowing into the graves. It is deeply distressing for families whose loved ones are buried here,” said Showkat Ahmad, a local resident.
Residents said the problem worsens during heavy rainfall or when the flow in the drain increases, raising concerns over hygiene as well as the sanctity of the burial ground.
The graveyard, located in the densely populated Old Town area, is among the largest in Baramulla town, with thousands of people buried there.
“Even people who have migrated elsewhere remain emotionally connected to this graveyard because their loved ones are buried here. The authorities need to ensure that the drain is properly cleaned,” said Altaf Ahmad Dar.
Residents urged the Municipal Council Baramulla to inspect the site, clear the blockage and take permanent measures to prevent wastewater from entering the graveyard.
They also called for regular cleaning and inspection of the drainage channel, saying temporary clearance would not resolve the problem unless its underlying cause was addressed.
“The sanctity of the graveyard cannot be compromised because of a neglected drain,” another resident said.
