HAL Koraput set to deliver 2,000th aero-engine as India deepens indigenous defence manufacturing push

ODISHA, OCT 5: India’s push to build greater self-reliance in critical defence technologies will reach a significant milestone on Tuesday when Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurates an event marking the delivery of the 2,000th aero-engine manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s Koraput Division.

The milestone, to be marked on October 6, represents nearly six decades of HAL Koraput’s contribution to India’s aerospace and defence manufacturing ecosystem and its role in supporting the operational preparedness of the Armed Forces. The achievement assumes particular significance because aircraft propulsion remains among the most technologically demanding and strategically sensitive areas of defence production.

The event will also showcase the establishment of a second production line for Shakti engines, backed by an investment of ₹218 crore, aimed at expanding production capacity to meet the growing requirements of indigenous helicopter programmes.

The additional production capacity is expected to strengthen the propulsion supply chain for indigenous helicopter platforms, including the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and Prachand Light Combat Helicopter (LCH).

The move is significant for India’s military aviation ambitions as helicopters play a critical role across diverse operational environments, including high-altitude areas, difficult terrain, troop mobility, logistics, surveillance and combat missions.

A stronger domestic engine-production ecosystem can also reduce dependence on overseas suppliers for critical propulsion requirements and improve the long-term sustainability of indigenous aviation platforms.

The 2,000th-engine milestone comes against the backdrop of the Government’s broader effort to transform India’s defence industrial base from one heavily dependent on imports into an ecosystem capable of designing, developing, manufacturing and sustaining advanced defence systems domestically.

The propulsion sector occupies a particularly important position in that transition. Aero-engines combine complex metallurgy, precision manufacturing, thermal engineering, advanced materials and sophisticated control systems, making indigenous capability in this field a major indicator of technological maturity.

The expansion of HAL Koraput’s production infrastructure therefore goes beyond simply increasing manufacturing capacity. It is aimed at strengthening one of the critical industrial foundations required for a more self-reliant aerospace sector.

HAL Koraput has played a long-standing role in India’s defence manufacturing journey, supporting the production, overhaul and maintenance ecosystem associated with military aviation.

The delivery of the 2,000th engine consequently marks both an industrial achievement and the continuation of an institutional capability developed over decades. The milestone reflects the accumulated experience of engineers, technicians, skilled workers and other personnel involved in maintaining the country’s military aviation infrastructure.

For the Armed Forces, a robust domestic manufacturing and maintenance base has strategic importance because equipment availability is directly linked to operational readiness. Indigenous production can provide greater control over supply chains, maintenance cycles and life-cycle support.

The new Shakti engine production line represents another important element of the Government’s effort to strengthen domestic aerospace manufacturing.

The Shakti engine is associated with India’s indigenous helicopter programmes, making assured production capacity important for the sustained expansion and induction of platforms such as Dhruv and Prachand.

The ₹218-crore investment in the additional line is expected to provide greater manufacturing capacity as demand for indigenous helicopter platforms rises, while strengthening the domestic ecosystem supporting military aviation.

The event also places Odisha in the spotlight as an important contributor to India’s strategic manufacturing capabilities. HAL Koraput’s presence has helped establish a significant aerospace and defence production footprint in the region, connecting local industrial capacity and skilled manpower with national security requirements.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar and HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K are among those scheduled to attend the milestone event along with senior officials and representatives of the defence and aerospace sector.

The delivery of the 2,000th aero-engine is ultimately more than a production statistic. It represents the evolution of an Indian defence manufacturing capability that has developed over nearly six decades and is now being expanded to support a new generation of indigenous military platforms.

For a country seeking greater strategic autonomy, control over critical technologies such as aircraft propulsion is central to the ability to build and sustain modern military power.

The Koraput milestone, coupled with the new Shakti engine production line, therefore underlines the Government’s larger objective of building an aerospace ecosystem in which Indian platforms increasingly depend on Indian design, Indian manufacturing and Indian technological capability—strengthening both defence preparedness and the country’s long-term industrial base.
