RAJOURI, OCT 18: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Traffic, Jammu and Kashmir, M. Suleman Choudhary, chaired a high-level joint coordination meeting at District Police Lines (DPL), Rajouri, on Sunday to review traffic management arrangements, strengthen road safety enforcement and formulate coordinated measures to reduce road accidents and ease traffic congestion across the Rajouri–Poonch region.
The meeting was attended by DIGP Rajouri–Poonch Range Sandeep Wazir, SSP Rajouri Naresh Singh, SSP Traffic Rural Jammu Master Popsy, Additional SP Rajouri Waseem Mehmood, Additional SP Poonch Hamid Banday, DySP (DAR) Rajouri Khaliq Hussain Choudhary, DySP SOG Rajouri Shammi Kumar, DySP Traffic Poonch–Rajouri Ajaz Choudhary, besides SHO Rajouri and District Traffic Inspectors of Poonch, Rajouri and Sunderbani.
During the meeting, the IGP Traffic emphasised the need for a coordinated, data-driven approach to traffic regulation, with particular focus on accident-prone locations, vulnerable road users and traffic violations contributing to road accidents. He directed officers to intensify enforcement in rural areas and identify accident hotspots through systematic assessment to facilitate targeted deployment, improve surveillance and strengthen preventive measures.
School bus safety and the inspection of commercial vehicles were highlighted as key priorities. The IGP directed the concerned officers to conduct regular audits of school buses and commercial vehicles to ensure compliance with prescribed safety norms and traffic regulations. The directions aim to strengthen road safety standards, particularly for schoolchildren and passengers who depend on public and commercial transport.
Calling for stringent action against traffic violations, Choudhary specifically directed officers to crack down on riding without helmets, triple riding and the use of mobile phones while driving. He stressed that enforcement must be consistent and visible to discourage reckless behaviour, promote responsible driving and reduce the risk of preventable road accidents.
The IGP also instructed officers to organise road safety awareness programmes to educate drivers, commuters and other road users about traffic rules and safe driving practices. He called for the establishment of joint checking points involving the local police and Traffic Police to improve enforcement, strengthen coordination and ensure effective monitoring of traffic movement across the region.
Addressing traffic congestion and road discipline, the IGP directed officers to take appropriate measures to resolve parking-related issues and improve traffic regulation at vulnerable and congested locations. He stressed that coordinated efforts between District Police and Traffic Police are essential for addressing local traffic challenges and ensuring smoother movement of vehicles, particularly in areas experiencing congestion.
Reiterating the need for accountability, Choudhary directed all officers to implement the instructions issued during the meeting in letter and spirit. He called for regular monitoring of enforcement activities, sustained field-level action and clear accountability at every level to ensure that the directions translate into tangible improvements in road safety and traffic management.
The meeting underscored the Traffic Police’s focus on strengthening enforcement, improving road-user discipline and adopting preventive measures to address accident risks across the Rajouri–Poonch region. The emphasis on accident hotspot identification, vehicle safety audits, joint checking points and strict action against dangerous driving practices is aimed at reducing road accidents and ensuring safer, smoother and more disciplined traffic movement throughout the region.
