NISSHIN, OCT 3: India held their nerve in a tense summit clash to defeat Pakistan by 19 runs and retain the men’s cricket gold medal at the Asian Games, completing another memorable chapter in the rivalry at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Saturday.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, India posted a formidable 211 for 7, overcoming a difficult, two-paced surface through aggressive strokeplay at the top and a sensational late assault from vice-captain Tilak Varma. The total ultimately proved beyond Pakistan’s reach despite a spirited fightback in the second half of the chase.

India’s innings was given early momentum by opener Abhishek Sharma, who produced a power-packed 61 from just 28 deliveries. His innings featured three fours and seven sixes, providing India with the kind of explosive Powerplay that allowed the team to build a commanding platform despite the early dismissals of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sanju Samson.

The innings briefly lost momentum when Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer departed within six deliveries of each other, leaving India needing another major acceleration. Tilak Varma responded emphatically, producing one of the defining innings of the final. He reached his half-century in only 21 balls, striking three fours and four sixes to propel India towards the 200-run mark and finish the innings with considerable momentum.

Pakistan’s response initially appeared to be slipping away as India’s bowlers kept the scoring under control during the Powerplay. However, Hazan Nawaz transformed the contest with a rapid half-century, launching an aggressive counterattack and briefly putting India under pressure.

India’s Ravi Bishnoi came under particular pressure during the middle overs, conceding 44 runs in three overs as Pakistan kept the required rate within striking distance. With 44 runs needed from the final 12 deliveries, the match entered a decisive phase.

Jasprit Bumrah then delivered a crucial penultimate over, restricting Pakistan and leaving the chasing side requiring 33 runs from the final over. Pakistan could not complete the improbable recovery, eventually finishing 19 runs short as India secured the gold medal.

The triumph also extended India’s recent dominance in the T20I rivalry, marking their seventh consecutive T20I victory over Pakistan since 2021 and their 15th win in 18 T20I meetings since 2007, according to the match record cited in the report.

The gold medal carries added significance for Indian cricket as it represents India’s second successive men’s cricket gold at the Asian Games, following their triumph at the previous edition in Hangzhou in 2023. India’s women’s team had also successfully defended its Asian Games cricket title, giving the country a clean sweep of cricket gold medals at the Games.

The victory also took India’s gold-medal tally to 19 at the ongoing Asian Games, adding another major achievement to the country’s campaign.

For India, the final was ultimately decided by the combination of Abhishek Sharma’s explosive start, Tilak Varma’s extraordinary finishing burst and Bumrah’s pressure bowling at the decisive stage—a complete performance that turned a nervy contest into another Asian Games gold-medal triumph.
