J&K auto market accelerates: Retail sales rise 42.84% in August

Automobile retail sales in Jammu and Kashmir registered a strong 42.84 per cent year-on-year growth in August 2026, with all major vehicle segments recording an increase in sales, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) J&K.

Total automobile retail in the Union Territory rose to 21,788 units in August 2026 from 15,253 units in August 2025, an increase of 6,535 units. On a month-on-month basis, retail sales also increased by 3.1 per cent, rising from 21,124 units in July 2026 to 21,788 units in August.

Passenger vehicles emerged as one of the strongest-performing segments, with retail sales increasing 54.81 per cent to 6,191 units in August 2026 from 3,999 units in the corresponding month last year.

The two-wheeler segment, which accounts for the largest share of the market, recorded a 36.28 per cent increase, with sales rising to 12,579 units from 9,230 units in August 2025.

Three-wheeler retail sales registered an even sharper increase of 64.68 per cent, rising to 1,655 units from 1,005 units a year earlier.

Commercial vehicle sales also maintained strong growth, increasing 29.23 per cent to 977 units from 756 units in August 2025.

The construction equipment segment more than doubled its retail numbers, registering a growth of 116.67 per cent, although from a smaller base. Sales increased to 39 units from 18 units in August last year.

Total automobile retail in the Union Territory rose to 21,788 units in August 2026 from 15,253 units in August 2025, an increase of 6,535 units.

Tractor retail sales rose 41.63 per cent, with 347 units sold in August 2026 compared to 245 units in August 2025.

Commenting on the performance, Sanjay Aggarwal, Chairperson, FADA J&K, described August as an encouraging month for the automobile industry in the Union Territory.

“August 2026 achieved a splendid growth of 42.84 per cent YoY and about 3.1 per cent MoM,” Aggarwal said. He said the overall growth reflected strong consumer confidence and improving economic activity across J&K.

“We are particularly encouraged to see that growth has been recorded across all major segments. Passenger Vehicles grew by 54.81 per cent, while 2-Wheelers registered a healthy growth of 36.28 per cent. The strong performance of 3-Wheelers, Commercial Vehicles and Tractors also reflects increasing economic and business activity in the region,” he said.

Aggarwal said the industry was now looking towards the upcoming festive and marriage seasons for further momentum. With Navratras, Dhanteras, Dussehra and Diwali approaching, along with the marriage season, automobile dealers expect increased consumer spending and stronger demand for personal mobility.

“These periods traditionally witness increased consumer spending and higher demand for personal mobility, particularly in the Passenger Vehicle and 2-Wheeler segments. We are hopeful that the positive sentiment generated during the festive season will translate into stronger retail numbers in the coming months,” he said.

He said the marriage season was another important demand driver, particularly for passenger vehicles and two-wheelers, as families often plan vehicle purchases around weddings and other family occasions.

At the same time, he said, commercial vehicles and three-wheelers could benefit from increased economic and commercial activity during the festive period.

“Dealers across J&K are gearing up to cater to the anticipated increase in customer enquiries and footfall. Attractive product offerings, financing options and festive campaigns by manufacturers and dealerships are likely to further support demand,” Aggarwal said.

He added that the industry remained cautiously optimistic that the combination of the festive and marriage seasons would help sustain the positive year-on-year growth momentum and potentially offset some of the recent month-on-month softness.
