SRINAGAR, OCT 25: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah flagged off the third edition of the Kashmir International Marathon in Srinagar on Sunday, bringing together runners from across India and abroad for a major sporting event that showcased the Valley’s potential as a destination for international competitions and sports tourism.
The marathon recorded 1,807 online registrations, including 1,221 participants from Jammu and Kashmir, 513 from other parts of the country and 73 international athletes representing 12 countries. The Tourism Department had expected the overall participation to cross 2,000.
The event featured a full marathon covering 42.195 kilometres and a half marathon spanning 21 kilometres. The full marathon was scheduled to start at 6:30 am, followed by the half marathon at 7:45 am, bringing together participants with varied sporting backgrounds and experience.
The scenic routes passed through prominent locations in Srinagar, including stretches along Dal Lake, Boulevard Road and Nishat Garden, highlighting Kashmir’s natural beauty and cultural heritage before a national and international sporting audience.
A separate prize category for runners from Jammu and Kashmir was introduced to encourage local participation and provide regional athletes with greater opportunities to showcase their talent alongside competitors from across the country and overseas.
The event also extended beyond the sporting arena, with the Chief Minister inaugurating a Marathon Expo featuring 20 stalls displaying local handicrafts, handlooms, agricultural produce and other products. The exhibition provided local entrepreneurs and businesses an opportunity to showcase their offerings to visiting runners and other participants.
Preparations included road repairs, barricading and arrangements along the marathon route. Srinagar Traffic Police implemented restrictions and diversions to facilitate the event, while emergency vehicles, including ambulances and fire tenders, were prioritised. Commuters were advised to follow traffic advisories, use alternative routes and contact the traffic helpline at 103 for assistance.
The successful staging of the third edition reinforced the marathon’s potential as an annual sporting fixture, combining athletics with tourism promotion and opportunities for local businesses. With international participation and a dedicated focus on regional runners, the event further highlighted Srinagar’s capacity to host sporting activities while showcasing Kashmir to a wider audience.
