JAMMU, OCT 17: An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 struck the Mirpur region at 8:40 pm on Saturday, with light tremors potentially felt in parts of the Rajouri–Poonch border belt of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the reported seismic data, the earthquake occurred at 8:40:13 pm Indian Standard Time on October 17, 2026, at a latitude of 33.286° North and longitude of 73.606° East. The quake originated at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located in the Mirpur region, around 66 kilometres west of Rajouri.

The relatively shallow depth of the earthquake means that light tremors may have been felt in nearby areas, particularly along the Rajouri–Poonch border belt, depending on local geological conditions and distance from the epicentre.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are generally considered minor and are unlikely to cause significant structural damage. However, the intensity of shaking can vary depending on the depth of the seismic event, local ground conditions and the distance of populated areas from the epicentre.

The tremor comes as a reminder of the seismic vulnerability of the wider Jammu and Kashmir region, which lies in a seismically active part of the Himalayan belt. The region has experienced earthquakes of varying magnitudes over the years, making awareness and preparedness important for residents.

There was no immediate confirmed information available about casualties or damage following the tremor. Residents should rely on official updates from the relevant earthquake-monitoring and disaster-management authorities for verified information.

Authorities and residents are advised to remain calm following minor tremors and follow standard earthquake safety precautions if further shaking occurs.
