VADODARA, OCT 29: Abdul Samad unleashed a spectacular counterattacking century, while Sahil Lotra displayed remarkable patience and resilience with an unbeaten 96, as Jammu and Kashmir fought back from a precarious position to secure a dramatic draw against Baroda in their Ranji Trophy Elite Group A encounter at Reliance Cricket Stadium here.

Facing the prospect of defeat after being asked to follow on, J&K staged a remarkable recovery through a match-defining 225-run partnership between Samad and Lotra. The duo combined aggression with defensive discipline to frustrate Baroda’s bowling attack and ensure that the visitors survived the final day of the four-day contest.

Resuming their second innings at 8 for one, J&K quickly slipped to 53 for four in 25.2 overs, leaving the side in serious trouble. With the middle order once again failing to withstand sustained pressure, the responsibility fell on Samad and Lotra to prevent a collapse and salvage the match.

Samad responded with an explosive innings of 143 off 152 deliveries, smashing 16 fours and seven sixes. His eighth first-class century underlined his ability to change the course of a match through aggressive strokeplay. The right-hander accelerated dramatically towards the hundred, scoring his final 20 runs before the milestone in a single over, putting the Baroda bowlers under intense pressure.

While Samad dominated the attack, Lotra anchored the innings with a technically sound and composed effort. Facing 240 balls, he remained unbeaten on 96, striking 12 boundaries and displaying exceptional concentration throughout his long stay at the crease. His ability to absorb pressure and deny Baroda further breakthroughs proved equally crucial in securing the draw.

The partnership transformed the contest, which had appeared firmly tilted in Baroda’s favour following their commanding first-innings performance. Samad’s attacking approach forced the bowlers to alter their plans, while Lotra’s steadfast defence ensured that J&K retained control of the situation until the close of play.

Earlier, J&K had struggled in their first innings against Baroda’s formidable bowling attack. Qamran Iqbal emerged as a major contributor with a determined 121 off 193 deliveries, including 11 fours and five sixes. He shared a valuable 75-run partnership with Umar Nazir, who produced a career-best 101 off 117 balls, striking eight fours and seven sixes.

Umar continued his resistance lower down the order, joining tailender Rohit Sharma, who scored 19, in a stubborn last-wicket stand worth 99 runs. Their effort lifted J&K to 303, but the total still left the side trailing Baroda by 313 runs, forcing them to follow on.

Baroda captain Atit Sheth led the bowling effort with figures of four for 60 from 17 overs. Bhargav Bhatt and Mahesh Pithiya claimed two wickets each, while Raj Limbani picked up one.

For Baroda, the draw represented a missed opportunity to convert a substantial first-innings advantage into victory. For J&K, however, the result was a testament to resilience, with Samad’s power-hitting and Lotra’s disciplined batting rescuing the side from a difficult position.

The contest also highlighted J&K’s contrasting batting strengths, with Iqbal and Umar contributing crucial centuries in the first innings before Samad and Lotra produced the decisive fourth-day recovery. The hard-fought result will offer the J&K side encouragement, while also underlining the need for greater consistency from its middle order in the matches ahead.
