SAMBA, OCT 21: Paying homage to the brave personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, Samba Police on Wednesday observed Police Commemoration Day-2026 at District Police Lines (DPL), Samba, with a solemn ceremony dedicated to remembering the courage, dedication and selfless service of police martyrs.
The observance brought together serving and retired police personnel, civil administration officials, representatives of security forces, martyrs’ families and prominent citizens to honour those who sacrificed their lives while protecting the nation and safeguarding its sovereignty, integrity and security.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Samba Anuj Kumar, took the salute of the Commemoration Day Parade and read out the names of the martyrs, recalling the sacrifices made by police personnel in the discharge of their duties. The ceremonial proceedings reflected the police force’s collective respect for its fallen colleagues and their enduring legacy of courage and commitment.
Following the parade, SSP Samba, accompanied by the Next of Kin (NoKs) of martyrs, officers from the Civil Administration, Police and other security forces, retired police officers and prominent citizens, laid floral tributes at the Martyrs’ Memorial at DPL Samba.
The solemn tribute served as a reminder of the risks undertaken by police personnel in maintaining law and order, protecting citizens and responding to security challenges. Their sacrifices continue to inspire serving personnel to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and dedication to duty.
Welfare of martyrs’ families remained a key focus of the observance. SSP Samba held an interaction with the NoKs, listened to their concerns and assured them that Samba Police would extend every possible assistance and support. The interaction underscored the department’s commitment to standing by the families of those who laid down their lives in the service of the nation.
In another significant part of the programme, family members visited the Police Martyrs Gallery at DPL Samba, providing an opportunity to remember the fallen personnel and reflect on their contributions and sacrifices.
As a gesture of appreciation, respect and solidarity, gift items were also distributed among the families of police martyrs. The initiative acknowledged the hardships faced by bereaved families and reaffirmed the importance of maintaining a lasting bond between the police fraternity and those who have lost their loved ones in the line of duty.
Police Commemoration Day is observed annually on October 21 in memory of police personnel who made the supreme sacrifice. The day marks the killing of ten Central Reserve Police Force personnel in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh on October 21, 1959.
The observance concluded with a renewed commitment to preserve the legacy of the martyrs and uphold the values of courage, sacrifice and public service. The ceremony highlighted that honouring police martyrs also means recognising their families, respecting their sacrifices and ensuring that their welfare remains a continuing responsibility.
