JAMMU, OCT 19: Vodafone Idea (Vi) has introduced what it describes as India’s first prepaid family plan, allowing customers to create family groups, share mobile data and access exclusive recharge discounts through the Vi app, in a move aimed at making prepaid connectivity more flexible and affordable.

The new initiative challenges the conventional prepaid model, under which data benefits are generally tied to individual subscribers, by enabling family members to share data whenever one of them runs short. The service is designed to address everyday connectivity needs, including online classes, video calls, navigation and access to essential digital services.

Under the new proposition, active Vi prepaid subscribers can create a family group through the Vi app, comprising up to four members, including one primary member and a maximum of three secondary members. Each member retains their individual prepaid plan and validity while gaining the flexibility to transfer 500 MB of data at a time to another family member who needs additional data.

A key feature of the initiative is its provision for guaranteed discounts of up to 10 per cent on every recharge made through the Vi app for each family member, offering an additional financial benefit alongside shared connectivity. Customers can also manage their family groups through the app, with the facility allowing eligible members to join across different telecom circles.

Commenting on the launch, Avneesh Khosla, Chief Marketing Officer of Vi, said the initiative reflects the company’s approach to making prepaid services more relevant to the changing needs of consumers. He emphasised that innovation in the prepaid segment should focus not only on providing more data but also on giving customers greater flexibility in how they use and share it.

Khosla said the proposition reinforces the company’s ‘Vi Pe Sab Hain VIP’ philosophy by enabling families to support one another’s connectivity requirements, irrespective of their location across the country.

To promote the new offering, Vi has also unveiled an advertising campaign featuring Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan. The campaign highlights how family members living in different cities can remain connected through the facility, bringing the company’s message of inclusive connectivity to a wider audience.

With data sharing, individual plan validity and recharge savings combined under a single family-group arrangement, Vi’s latest offering seeks to introduce a new dimension to India’s prepaid mobile market. The initiative places greater emphasis on shared benefits and family connectivity while retaining the flexibility associated with individual prepaid subscriptions.
