Kathua Police recover 105 lost mobile phones worth ₹23.50 lakh, trace ₹50.43 lakh in cyber fraud cases

KATHUA, OCT 5: In a major citizen-centric policing initiative, J&K Police Kathua has recovered 105 lost or stolen mobile phones valued at approximately ₹23.50 lakh, including nine Apple iPhones, while Cyber Police Station Kathua has also facilitated the recovery of ₹50.43 lakh defrauded in online financial fraud cases between May and September 2026.

The recoveries were achieved under the overall supervision of SSP Kathua Mohita Sharma, with the IT Section of DPO Kathua using technical analysis, digital tracing and sustained coordination to locate mobile handsets reported missing or stolen from different police stations across the district.

According to police, the recovered phones were traced across several locations, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Following verification and completion of requisite legal formalities, the handsets are being restored to their respective owners.

The latest recovery takes the district police’s two-year tally to around 700 lost or stolen mobile phones, having an estimated cumulative value of ₹1.29 crore. The sustained recovery drive has helped citizens regain valuable personal devices while demonstrating the role of technical investigation in tracing stolen and missing property across state and UT boundaries.

In a parallel crackdown on cyber-enabled financial crime, Cyber Police Station Kathua recovered ₹50,43,502 between May and September 2026 in multiple cyber fraud complaints. Police said the recoveries were achieved through prompt intervention, freezing of suspicious transactions and coordinated action with banks, payment gateways and other service providers.

Since its establishment, Cyber Police Station Kathua has recovered a cumulative ₹2,28,25,424 in various cyber fraud cases, reflecting continued efforts to track fraudulent transactions and prevent victims from suffering permanent financial losses.

District Police Kathua has urged citizens to report lost or stolen mobile phones without delay through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) and to immediately report cyber financial frauds by dialling 1930, particularly during the crucial initial period after the transaction, or by filing a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

The recoveries underline the growing importance of technical surveillance, digital investigation and rapid financial intervention in modern policing, while reinforcing Kathua Police’s focus on recovering citizens’ property and responding swiftly to technology-driven crimes.
