JAMMU, OCT 4: In a major push towards community-oriented policing and stronger grassroots engagement, the J&K Police in the Jammu-Samba-Kathua (JSK) Range has decided to institutionalise regular police-public interaction at the beat level, with a special focus on connecting with youth and local communities.

DIGP Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range Shridhar Patil has issued directions to officers to strengthen the beat system as a key mechanism for improving public confidence, addressing community concerns and enhancing police accessibility at the grassroots level.

Under the initiative, police-public meetings will now be organised every month at the beat level through various community-policing activities. The move is aimed at creating a direct and structured channel between residents and the police, enabling local issues to be identified and addressed through sustained interaction rather than relying solely on conventional police station-level engagement.

The initiative places Beat Officers at the centre of community policing, encouraging them to take greater leadership in building public confidence, maintaining regular contact with residents and facilitating delivery of police-related services at the local level.

As part of the initiative, the DIGP himself participated in a beat-level meeting at Police Station Bakshi Nagar, giving a direct push to the new public-connect mechanism and underscoring the importance of grassroots engagement in policing.

The beat-level meetings are expected to provide residents with an opportunity to raise local concerns, share information, discuss emerging security and social issues and interact directly with police personnel responsible for their respective areas. Particular emphasis is being placed on engaging young people and encouraging their participation in community-oriented initiatives.

The move also seeks to strengthen preventive policing and information-sharing at the neighbourhood level, allowing Beat Officers to remain closely connected with developments within their jurisdictions and respond to issues through timely coordination.

The initiative reflects the J&K Police’s broader emphasis on people-centric policing, community participation and confidence-building, with the beat system being positioned as a direct interface between the police organisation and the public.

With monthly meetings planned across the range, senior officers are expected to monitor the implementation of the initiative and ensure that the beat system evolves into a consistent, accessible and responsive platform for police-public engagement.
