Operation Kamdhenu: Jammu Police foil bovines smuggling bids, rescue 32 animals, seize two trucks

JAMMU, OCT 4: Intensifying its crackdown on illegal transportation of bovines, Jammu Police foiled two separate bovine smuggling attempts in the Nagrota and Kanachak areas, rescuing 32 bovines and seizing two trucks during naka checking and enforcement operations carried out under Operation Kamdhenu.

In the first action, Police Station Nagrota intercepted a truck bearing registration number JK02BP-6685 during naka checking at Ban Toll Plaza. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 16 bovines allegedly being transported illegally. Taking advantage of the situation, the driver abandoned the truck and fled from the spot.

Police immediately seized the vehicle and rescued all the bovines, which were subsequently placed in safe custody as per the prescribed legal procedure. In connection with the incident, FIR Number 236/2026 under Section 223 of the BNS and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act has been registered at Police Station Nagrota.

In a separate operation, Police Station Kanachak intercepted another truck bearing registration number JK02CA-0235 in the Jhiri area. The vehicle, which was reportedly travelling from Rajpura, was found carrying 16 bovines. The driver allegedly abandoned the vehicle and escaped under the cover of darkness.

The Kanachak Police team seized the truck and rescued the 16 bovines, shifting them to safe custody in accordance with the prescribed procedure.

A case FIR Number 174/2026 under Section 223 BNS and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act has been registered at Police Station Kanachak.

With both drivers absconding, police have launched efforts to identify and apprehend the accused persons, while investigators are also examining the ownership and movement of the seized vehicles and the possible involvement of other individuals in the alleged transportation network.

The twin operations have resulted in the recovery of 32 bovines and seizure of two vehicles, besides triggering separate criminal investigations at Nagrota and Kanachak.

Jammu Police said enforcement under Operation Kamdhenu would continue against illegal bovine transportation and cruelty to animals, with field units maintaining surveillance and conducting naka checking at vulnerable routes to prevent such activities. Further investigation in both cases is underway.
