The observance provided an opportunity to remember the courage, dedication and unwavering commitment of police personnel who sacrificed their lives while serving the nation and protecting its citizens. The gathering paid tribute to the fallen heroes whose sacrifices remain an enduring source of inspiration for serving personnel and the wider community.
The participation of civil administration officials, members of civil society and retired police officers reflected a collective expression of respect for the martyrs and recognition of the challenges faced by personnel in the discharge of their duties.
In a gesture of solidarity and appreciation, SSP Awantipora Irshad H. Rather distributed gifts among the Next of Kin (NoKs) of police martyrs and interacted with the bereaved families during the ceremony.
The SSP enquired about their well-being and acknowledged the sacrifices made by the families of personnel who laid down their lives in the service of the nation. The gesture also underscored the enduring responsibility of the department towards the families of martyrs, who continue to carry the legacy of their loved ones with courage and dignity.
Police Commemoration Day is observed annually on October 21 to honour police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. The day commemorates the sacrifice of ten Central Reserve Police Force personnel killed in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh on October 21, 1959.
The observance at DPL Awantipora reaffirmed the importance of remembering the fallen personnel, recognising their contributions to national security and standing in solidarity with their families.
The ceremony served as a reminder that the sacrifices of police martyrs must never be forgotten and that their legacy of courage, duty and public service continues to inspire future generations.
