BJP targets Rahul Gandhi after Congress fails to win 28 Legislative Council seats across four states

JAMMU, OCT 28: The BJP on Wednesday stepped up its political attack on the Congress following its failure to secure any of the 28 Legislative Council seats it contested across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Karnataka, with party spokesperson and Convenor International Affairs Gaurav Gupta questioning the Congress leadership’s electoral strategy, organisational strength and political approach.

Reacting to the outcome, Gupta alleged that the results exposed serious weaknesses within the Congress and highlighted a growing disconnect between the party’s political messaging and its electoral performance. He argued that repeated criticism of political opponents and confrontation with institutions could not compensate for deficiencies in organisational preparedness, grassroots mobilisation and public outreach.

Launching a direct attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Gupta said the party leadership needed to undertake introspection rather than rely on political rhetoric. He described the Congress’s failure to win any of the contested seats as a setback and claimed that the leadership had yet to demonstrate an effective strategy for translating its political presence into electoral victories.

“Rahul Gandhi seems determined to remain at zero when it comes to electoral success,” Gupta remarked, alleging that repeated accusations and political theatrics could not replace credible leadership, a clear strategy and public trust.

Gupta particularly highlighted Karnataka, where the Congress is in power, after the BJP-JD(S) alliance reportedly won all four Legislative Council seats under discussion.

He said the outcome raised questions about the Congress government’s ability to convert its position in power into electoral support among graduates and teachers. According to him, the results demonstrated that holding office alone did not guarantee electoral success and that political parties needed to maintain strong engagement with their respective constituencies.

The BJP spokesperson maintained that electoral performance depended on organisational preparedness, effective leadership and a sustained connection with voters. He alleged that the Congress had failed to adequately address these factors.

Gupta accused the Congress leadership of concentrating more on confrontation and criticism than on strengthening its organisational network and addressing its electoral shortcomings.

He argued that democratic politics required accountability, self-assessment and a clear vision for development. Rather than questioning institutions or looking for explanations outside the party, he said, the Congress should examine its campaign strategies, improve its grassroots presence and reconnect with voters.

Referring to the use of ballot papers in the Legislative Council elections, Gupta argued that the Congress leadership should focus on understanding the reasons behind its defeats. He presented the results across the four states as an opportunity for the party to reassess its political approach and organisational functioning.

His remarks, however, reflected the BJP’s interpretation of the electoral outcome, and the press release did not provide an independent assessment of the factors behind the Congress’s performance.

Describing the Congress’s approach as “anarchy politics”, Gupta alleged that the party was relying excessively on allegations, confrontation and criticism instead of constructive engagement and organisational consolidation.

He maintained that political parties could regain public confidence only through credibility, effective leadership and a clear commitment to development. Slogans and accusations, he argued, were insufficient to secure electoral victories without a strong organisational structure and public support.

Concluding his remarks, Gupta said the Congress needed to move beyond political rhetoric and demonstrate greater accountability if it hoped to improve its electoral fortunes.

The BJP’s latest attack adds to the ongoing political exchanges between the two parties, with the Legislative Council results becoming a fresh point of contention over leadership, organisational effectiveness and electoral strategy. While Gupta predicted continued difficulties for the Congress under its present approach, the longer-term political implications of the results remain to be seen.
