RAJOURI, SEPT 19: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), under Project Sampark, has intensified black-topping work on the strategically important National Highway-144A, deploying advanced machinery across multiple stretches to strengthen connectivity between the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch.
Work is progressing at several locations between Rajouri and Manjakote, where BRO teams are carrying out black-topping operations on a war footing to improve the road surface and ease traffic movement along the vital corridor.
The Sunderbani-Nowshera section in Rajouri district is nearing completion, with the upgraded stretch expected to provide smoother and safer movement for commuters and transport operators.
NH-144A is a key lifeline for the border districts, linking Rajouri and Poonch with Jammu and providing onward connectivity towards the Kashmir Valley through the Mughal Road. The ongoing upgrade is aimed at creating a faster and more reliable road corridor between the Jammu and Kashmir regions.
The project also involves major tunnel infrastructure. Three tunnels have reportedly been completed and opened for traffic, while another tunnel is under construction, further improving the highway’s capacity and reducing difficult stretches along the route.
The upgraded road is expected to deliver tangible benefits to residents of remote and border areas by cutting travel time, improving transport of essential goods and providing easier access to healthcare and other services. Reduction of sharp curves and improvements at challenging stretches are also expected to ease traffic bottlenecks.
For security forces operating along the sensitive border belt, the improved highway is providing a more efficient movement corridor between Rajouri and Poonch, reducing delays caused by difficult road conditions.
The improved connectivity is also expected to support local trade, small businesses and tourism, making remote destinations across the Rajouri-Poonch belt more accessible.
BRO personnel continue to work across multiple stretches with heavy machinery and accelerated construction operations, with the focus on completing the remaining works on NH-144A at the earliest.
