SRINAGAR, SEPT 25: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday moved a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly seeking the immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, triggering strong protests from BJP members over a reference to the 2000 autonomy resolution.
The resolution, moved after Question Hour, stated that in addition to the resolutions passed by the House on June 26, 2000 and November 6, 2024, the Assembly calls upon the Government of India to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and resolves that the resolution be forwarded to the Government of India. The development has been reported by multiple local outlets on Friday.
The reference to the June 26, 2000 autonomy resolution, passed during the Farooq Abdullah-led government, drew objections from BJP legislators.
BJP MLA R.S. Pathania said the party would not allow discussion on the issue of autonomy in the House.
BJP members subsequently entered the Well of the House and raised slogans in protest.
Amid the uproar, some BJP legislators were also seen tearing the resolution into pieces, leading to further disruption of the proceedings.
The November 6, 2024 resolution referred to in the latest motion had sought the restoration of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
The demand for restoration of full statehood has remained a major issue for the ruling National Conference-led government during the ongoing Assembly session.
