SRINAGAR, SEPT 25: Young athletes across Jammu and Kashmir got fresh opportunities to compete and showcase their skills as the J&K Sports Council organised and facilitated Pencak Silat, Wushu, Yogasana and Chess events in Doda, Shopian, Samba and Srinagar.
In Bhaderwah, Doda, around 30 players took part in a Pencak Silat competition organised at Bharatiya Vidya Mandir School under the My Youth My Pride initiative.
The event was witnessed by nearly 40 spectators and provided participants with grassroots-level competitive exposure.
At Shopian, more than 300 players participated in the three-day ASMITA Wushu Women’s League and District Wushu Championship at Indoor Sports Stadium, Arhama.
Players from the Khelo India Wushu Centre, schools and clubs competed in the championship, with the Khelo India Wushu Centre Shopian securing the overall championship and Shahi Hamdan School finishing runner-up.
In Samba, over 60 athletes participated in the 7th District Samba Yogasana Sports Championship 2026 at the Indoor Stadium.
Competitions were held in Sub-Junior, Cadet, Senior and Artistic Yogasana categories, while athletes from the special children category also delivered a notable performance, highlighting the scope for inclusive participation in sports.
Meanwhile, the 6th Kashmir FIDE International Rating Chess Tournament 2026 commenced at the Indoor Stadium, Polo Ground, Srinagar, on September 25 and will conclude on September 26.
The tournament is being organised by the Kashmir Chess Club in collaboration with the All J&K Chess Association under the aegis of the J&K Sports Council.
The district-level activities are aimed at expanding competitive opportunities, identifying emerging talent and encouraging greater youth participation in organised sports, including among players from rural and remote areas.
