HANDWARA, OCT 28: Handwara Police organised a cyber awareness programme at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Vilgam, to educate students and teachers about emerging cyber threats, online financial frauds and the importance of safe and responsible internet use.
The programme focused on sensitising participants to the growing risks associated with digital platforms, including phishing attacks, fraudulent online transactions, fake social media profiles, identity theft, cyberbullying and other forms of cybercrime. The initiative aimed to equip students and teachers with the knowledge required to identify suspicious online activities and take appropriate precautions against potential cyber threats.
During the awareness session, participants were advised to exercise caution while browsing the internet, using social media platforms and conducting online financial transactions. Particular emphasis was laid on protecting personal information, banking credentials and other sensitive details from fraudsters operating through deceptive calls, messages, websites and digital links.
Students and teachers were cautioned against clicking on suspicious links, responding to unverified online requests or sharing One-Time Passwords (OTPs), banking details and confidential information with unknown persons. The importance of maintaining strong passwords, verifying the authenticity of online profiles and exercising discretion while sharing personal information on social media was also highlighted.
The participants were encouraged to remain vigilant against cyberbullying and fraudulent online identities and to promptly report cybercrime incidents to the concerned authorities. Timely reporting, awareness of digital risks and responsible online behaviour were emphasised as essential measures for preventing cyber offences and limiting potential financial or personal losses.
The programme highlighted the importance of cyber education in schools, particularly as students increasingly rely on digital platforms for communication, learning and access to information. Building awareness at an early stage can help young internet users recognise online risks, safeguard their digital identities and make informed decisions while navigating cyberspace.
Through the initiative, Handwara Police reiterated the importance of community-oriented awareness programmes in promoting cyber safety and responsible digital behaviour. The outreach at GHSS Vilgam also underscored the role of educational institutions in spreading awareness about cybercrime prevention among students, teachers and the wider community.
The programme concluded with an emphasis on vigilance, digital responsibility and the need for collective efforts to create a safer online environment.
