LEH, OCT 20: Ladakh is set to enter a new era in medical education and healthcare infrastructure, with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare approving the operationalisation of the Union Territory’s first medical college in Leh from the academic session 2027–28.

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena announced the development, describing it as the fulfilment of a long-standing aspiration of the people of Ladakh. The approval is expected to expand access to medical education within the Union Territory, create new opportunities for local youth and strengthen the region’s healthcare system over the long term.

A key component of the approval is a one-time relaxation of the requirement to complete 80 per cent of the infrastructure before initiating recruitment of faculty and support staff. According to the Lieutenant Governor, Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda took cognisance of his request and granted the relaxation, enabling the administration to begin preparatory recruitment while construction of the dedicated academic infrastructure continues.

The decision will facilitate the initiation of staggered recruitment against 103 sanctioned regular posts, covering the staffing requirements necessary for the proposed institution. The move is intended to allow preparatory administrative and recruitment processes to progress alongside the development of the college’s physical infrastructure, helping the administration work towards its planned commencement in 2027–28.

The establishment of a medical college in Leh is expected to open new avenues for students aspiring to pursue medical education without having to depend entirely on institutions outside the region. It also holds significance for a geographically challenging region where strengthening healthcare infrastructure and developing a locally available pool of trained medical professionals remain important priorities.

Beyond medical education, the proposed institution is expected to contribute to the broader healthcare ecosystem by supporting the development of medical expertise, improving opportunities for professional training and strengthening the region’s long-term capacity to meet healthcare needs. Its operationalisation would mark a significant addition to Ladakh’s educational and medical infrastructure.

Expressing gratitude to the Union Health Minister, Saxena said the approval had paved the way for preparatory recruitment even as construction of the dedicated academic facilities progresses. He also assured that the Union Territory Administration would make the necessary arrangements to welcome the first batch of medical students in the proposed academic session.

The administration will now need to advance recruitment preparations, infrastructure development and other essential arrangements required for the institution’s planned launch. The proposed 2027–28 commencement remains the stated target, with the necessary preparatory work to be undertaken in the intervening period.

With the Centre’s approval, Ladakh has taken an important step towards establishing its first medical college in Leh, bringing the region closer to expanding local medical education opportunities and building a stronger foundation for future healthcare development.
