The Department of Geology, University of Kashmir (KU), organised an interactive expert talk by Prof. Michal Krobicki, AGH University of Krakow, Faculty of Geology, Poland, on “Palaeobiogeographical Significance of the Early Jurassic Lithiotis-type Bivalves from Himalayan–Karakoram–Tibet Perspective & the Early Permian Breakup of Pangea/Open Neotethys” at the Main Campus.

The talk aimed to provide students and researchers with insights into the geological history of the Himalayan–Karakoram–Tibet region, with particular focus on palaeobiogeography, plate movements, the evolution of the Neotethys and the geological processes associated with the breakup of Pangea.

“The Himalayan region provides an important geological record for understanding past plate movements, paleogeographic changes and the opening and evolution of the Neotethys,” Prof. Krobicki said while explaining the significance of the geological evidence discussed during the talk.

He also highlighted the importance of such academic engagements in exposing students and researchers to contemporary developments in Earth sciences and creating opportunities for interaction with international experts.

Speaking on the occasion, renowned Earth scientist and former Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Talat Ahmad said, “Such academic interactions are important for connecting students and researchers with current developments and international scholarship in Earth sciences.”

Dean, School of Earth & Environmental Sciences, KU, Prof. Pervez Ahmad, and Head, Department of Geology, KU, Prof. Ghulam Jeelani, noted the value of such expert lectures in strengthening academic exchange and encouraging research-oriented discussions within the department.

The talk was followed by an interactive question-and-answer session, during which students and research scholars actively engaged with Prof. Krobicki on various aspects of the subject.

Earlier, Prof. Krobicki called on the Vice-Chancellor, KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, and held a brief interaction with her in the presence of Prof. Talat Ahmad.

During the interaction, Prof. Krobicki emphasised the significance of discussions on Himalayan geology and paleobiogeography in understanding the region’s complex geological evolution.

 He noted that such academic engagements provide students with valuable opportunities for scholarly exchange, while also helping them stay abreast of the latest developments and emerging research in the field.
