KULGAM, OCT 1: The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Home Guards (HG) Unit Kulgam conducted a comprehensive disaster preparedness and safety awareness programme at Government High School Nillow on Thursday, bringing practical lessons in emergency response, first aid, CPR and disaster management to the school community.
The programme was organised under the supervision of the DYSP (DAR) cum Area Commander, HGs Kulgam, in accordance with the schedule of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kulgam.
Around 51 students and 10 members of the school staff participated in the awareness programme, which was designed to familiarise students with basic safety measures and appropriate responses during emergencies and disasters.
During the session, the SDRF team covered key aspects of disaster management, first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), along with safety measures related to earthquakes and fires. The programme focused on the importance of remaining calm, taking timely action and following appropriate safety procedures during emergency situations.
The team also incorporated drug abuse awareness into the programme under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, sensitising students about the harmful consequences of substance abuse and the importance of making healthy and responsible choices.
The interaction provided students with an opportunity to learn about emergency preparedness while also understanding their potential role in responding safely during critical situations. The emphasis on first aid and CPR was particularly aimed at developing basic life-saving awareness among young participants.
School authorities appreciated the initiative, with the Headmaster of Government High School Nillow expressing gratitude to the SDRF team for its efforts in educating students about disaster preparedness, emergency response and safety measures.
The programme also reinforced the importance of taking disaster awareness and safety education to educational institutions, where students can become effective carriers of preparedness messages within their families and communities.
The SDRF initiative forms part of the scheduled awareness activities being conducted in coordination with DDMA Kulgam, combining disaster-risk awareness with practical safety education and social awareness initiatives.
Through such programmes, SDRF/HG personnel are seeking to strengthen a culture of preparedness among young people, equipping students with basic knowledge that can prove crucial during earthquakes, fires, medical emergencies and other unforeseen situations.
