BARAMULLA/SHOPIAN, SEPT 16: Police intensified enforcement against traffic violations, illegal mining and unauthorised transportation of minerals across Baramulla and Shopian districts, seizing vehicles and initiating legal action during naka checking, patrolling and surprise operations.
In Baramulla, Police Station Boniyar conducted naka checking at Boniyar Main Market and challaned nine vehicles under relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Five vehicles were seized under Section 207 of the Act, while violations including driving without seat belts, use of mobile phones while driving and driving without valid licences were also detected.
At Bijhama, a naka established by Police Station Bijhama intercepted two dumpers bearing registration numbers JK05M-2847 and JK05K-5687, allegedly carrying gypsum.
The vehicles were subsequently challaned by the Mining Department under relevant provisions.
During another surprise checking operation, tractor JK05Q-6043 was found operating without valid royalty documents and was seized and challaned under relevant provisions of the MMDR Act.
At Jahama, police also seized a motor allegedly being used for illegal sand extraction and initiated further legal action.
At Mirgund, Baramulla Police seized 11 commercial vehicles, including five dumpers and six tippers, under Section 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act for allegedly plying without valid statutory documents.
In Shopian, police continued action against illegal mining and unauthorised transportation of minerals, seizing one JCB and six tractors allegedly involved in extraction and transportation without valid royalty documents.
Police Station Shopian registered FIR Number 195/2026, while Police Post Hermain registered FIR Number 193/2026 in separate cases.
Investigations have been initiated.Police reiterated that violations involving illegal mining, unauthorised mineral transportation and traffic laws would invite strict legal action.
The enforcement drive, police said, is aimed at protecting natural resources, ensuring regulatory compliance, improving road discipline and safeguarding road users.
The public has been urged to cooperate with police and concerned departments and report unlawful mining and other violations.
