Anantnag Police intensifies anti-drug crackdown, arrests six; cannabis, heroin recovered

ANANTNAG, OCT 5: Tightening the enforcement net against narcotics trafficking and street-level drug peddling, Anantnag Police has arrested six persons in separate operations conducted across the district and recovered 114 grams of cannabis and 3.37 grams of heroin, along with ₹11,800 in suspected drug-related cash and a weighing machine, officials said.

The operations were carried out by teams from Police Station Srigufwara, Police Station Bijbehara and Police Post GBS as part of the district police’s sustained campaign against the circulation of narcotic substances and the networks facilitating their distribution.

During naka checking at Sirhama Crossing, Srigufwara Police apprehended Khurshid Ahmad Nengroo, a resident of Nowshara, and recovered 70 grams of cannabis during a search. In a separate operation at Pazalpora, Bijbehara Police intercepted Ubaid Majeed Shah, a resident of Guree, from whose possession 15 grams of cannabis was recovered.

In another action near Wopzan, police apprehended Mohd Shameem Das, a resident of Waghama, and recovered 15 grams of cannabis during checking. Bijbehara Police subsequently conducted another operation near Tulkhan, where Muneeb Ahmad Ganie, a resident of Akad Mattan, was apprehended and 14 grams of cannabis was recovered from his possession.

In a separate checkpoint operation at Chee Tarbal Bridge, a team from Police Post GBS intercepted Zubair Ahmad Palla of Reshi Colony, Mir Danter, Anantnag, and Danish Mushtaq of Nowbugh Larnoo. The operation resulted in the recovery of 3.37 grams of heroin, ₹11,800 in cash and a weighing machine from their possession.

The recovery of a weighing machine along with heroin and cash is being examined as part of the ongoing investigation to establish the nature of the alleged drug distribution activity and identify possible linkages, if any. Police said further investigation is underway in all the cases to establish the source of the recovered contraband and trace other persons who may be connected with the supply chain.

Legal proceedings have been initiated in the respective cases under relevant provisions of the law, with further investigation being conducted by the concerned police units.

The coordinated operations underline Anantnag Police’s focus on disrupting narcotics activity through checkpoint surveillance, targeted searches, intelligence-based enforcement and sustained action against suspected drug networks. Police reiterated that the campaign against drug trafficking and substance abuse will continue across the district.

Police also urged residents, parents and community members to remain vigilant and share credible information regarding drug trafficking or peddling with law-enforcement agencies. The latest action, officials said, forms part of continued efforts to prevent narcotics from reaching vulnerable sections of society and strengthen the campaign for a drug-free Anantnag.
