Kulgam Police arrests drug peddler with cannabis-like substance

KULGAM, OCT 6: Police arrested a suspected drug peddler and recovered around 14 grams of charas-like substance during a naka checking operation at Chattabal Crossing in Kulgam, officials said on Tuesday, as the ongoing crackdown against narcotics trafficking continued across the district.

According to police, a party deployed for dynamic naka checking at Chattabal Crossing noticed a person moving under suspicious circumstances. On spotting the police personnel, the individual allegedly attempted to flee from the spot, but was intercepted and apprehended by the naka party.

The arrested person was identified as Mohd Ayoub Bhat, son of Abdul Khaliq Bhat, resident of Nursingpora, Kulgam. During his personal search, police recovered approximately 14 grams of a charas-like substance from his possession.

Police said the recovery was made during routine enforcement aimed at detecting and disrupting the movement of narcotic substances through the area. The seizure has prompted further investigation into the source of the recovered substance and the circumstances in which it was allegedly being carried.

A case under the relevant provisions of law has been registered at the concerned police station, and investigation has been set in motion to establish the full circumstances of the case and ascertain whether the accused has any links with a wider narcotics network.

The latest action comes amid intensified efforts by the J&K Police to identify persons involved in the possession, transportation and distribution of illicit drugs and to prevent narcotic substances from reaching vulnerable sections of society, particularly youth.

Police have appealed to the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law-enforcement agencies by sharing credible information regarding drug peddling, trafficking or other narcotics-related activities. Officials reiterated that information provided by citizens can assist enforcement agencies in identifying and disrupting local drug networks.
