JAMMU, OCT 24: Akhnoor Police has detained an alleged habitual bovine smuggler under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act (PSA), 1978, as part of preventive measures aimed at maintaining public order and curbing activities linked to bovine smuggling.
The detenue, identified as Hamid Mohd, son of Hussain Mohd, a resident of Truta Phalla in Tehsil Akhnoor, Jammu district, was taken into preventive detention following an order issued by the District Magistrate, Jammu. The detention order was executed by Police Station Akhnoor, and the accused has been lodged in District Jail Bhaderwah.
According to police records, 10 FIRs were registered against the detenue between 2017 and 2023, including cases related to bovine smuggling. Citing his alleged criminal antecedents and inputs concerning activities considered prejudicial to public order, Akhnoor Police prepared a detailed dossier and submitted it to the competent authority for consideration.
Following examination of the dossier, the competent authority issued the detention order under the provisions of the PSA, which provides for preventive detention in circumstances prescribed by law.
Police said the action forms part of efforts to address activities that, according to their assessment, may affect public peace and tranquillity. The latest detention underscores the preventive measures being adopted by Akhnoor Police against individuals allegedly involved in repeated bovine-smuggling-related offences.
Jammu Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace, public order and security, stating that lawful action would continue against individuals whose activities are assessed to pose a threat to public tranquillity.
The detention is a preventive measure under the PSA and is distinct from conviction in a criminal case.
