JAMMU, OCT 2: The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday paid rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries, recalling their enduring contribution to the nation and emphasising the relevance of their ideals of truth, simplicity, discipline, patriotism and selfless public service.
The programme was held at the BJP headquarters at Trikuta Nagar, Jammu, where J&K BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma, along with senior party leaders and workers, paid floral tributes to the portraits of the two national leaders. Sat Sharma has been leading the J&K BJP organisation and has recently chaired several organisational and public-outreach programmes at the Trikuta Nagar headquarters.
Sat Sharma was accompanied by BJP Vice-Presidents Priya Sethi, Rakesh Mahajan and Rekha Mahajan, General Secretary Gopal Mahajan, MLA Dr Devinder Kumar Manyal, Office Secretary Tilak Raj Gupta, District President Naresh Singh Jasrotia, All Cells Co-Incharge Munish Khajuria, Adv. Rajinder Jamwal, Nitish Mahajan and other senior leaders and party workers.
Addressing the gathering, Sat Sharma said Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri represented two powerful traditions of nation-building—moral leadership and selfless service on one hand, and simplicity, integrity and steadfast commitment to national duty on the other.
He said Mahatma Gandhi’s emphasis on truth, non-violence, cleanliness, self-discipline and social harmony continues to hold significance in contemporary society. Recalling Shastri’s public life, Sharma highlighted his humility, simplicity, courage and commitment to national interest, saying his life remains an example of responsible leadership and dedication to the country.
The BJP president stressed that the legacy of great national leaders should not remain confined to ceremonial observances but should inspire citizens to translate their principles into everyday conduct. He said public life should be guided by a spirit of service, discipline, accountability and responsibility towards society.
“Both Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri demonstrated through their lives that service to the nation is above personal interests and positions,” Sharma said, calling upon BJP workers to draw inspiration from their lives and strengthen their commitment to serving society.
He further said that the country’s development journey requires active participation and collective responsibility from citizens. He emphasised that remembering national icons should also encourage people to work towards a strong, self-reliant and developed India, while upholding social harmony and civic responsibility.
The programme concluded with floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri, with the BJP leaders and workers reaffirming their commitment to public service and to carrying forward the values associated with the two national leaders.
The observance was part of the wider Gandhi Jayanti commemorations across Jammu and Kashmir, where public institutions and organisations also marked October 2 by recalling Gandhi’s message of non-violence, social harmony and constructive nation-building.
