RAIPUR, OCT 18: Skipper Smriti Mandhana and explosive opener Shafali Verma produced a breathtaking display of power-hitting as India registered a comprehensive nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the ongoing T20I series at the Shaheed Veer Narayan International Cricket Stadium here on Saturday. Chasing a modest target of 103, the Indian batters made the contest a one-sided affair, reaching 104 for one in just 8.3 overs to underline their batting dominance.
The Indian chase was defined by an aggressive approach from the outset, with Shafali and Mandhana taking the Zimbabwean bowlers apart through a succession of boundaries and towering sixes. The opening pair combined attacking intent with excellent timing, leaving Zimbabwe with little opportunity to build pressure or make a comeback.
Shafali was particularly destructive, smashing 55 off just 25 deliveries in an innings decorated with six fours and four sixes. Her fearless stroke play set the tempo for the chase, as she repeatedly found the boundary and punished the opposition whenever the bowlers missed their lengths. The young opener’s rapid half-century ensured India raced towards the target without allowing the required run rate to become a factor.
At the other end, Mandhana provided equally authoritative support, remaining unbeaten on 47 off 25 balls. The Indian captain struck six fours and two sixes, showcasing her trademark elegance alongside calculated aggression. Her ability to find gaps and clear the boundary complemented Shafali’s power-hitting perfectly, with the pair putting Zimbabwe’s bowling attack under relentless pressure.
The opening partnership effectively settled the contest, with India requiring only 8.3 overs to complete the chase. Biza claimed the only Indian wicket to fall, but the breakthrough came too late to alter the outcome, as Mandhana remained unbeaten to guide the side home in emphatic fashion.
Earlier, Zimbabwe managed 102 for eight in their allotted 20 overs after India kept the scoring under control through disciplined bowling and regular breakthroughs. Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano top-scored with 34 runs, providing the main contribution to the visitors’ innings, while skipper Josephine Nkomo remained unbeaten on 27 to help Zimbabwe reach a three-figure total.
However, Zimbabwe struggled to build sustained partnerships or generate the momentum needed to post a challenging score. India’s bowlers maintained pressure through the innings, preventing the opposition from accelerating consistently and restricting them to 102 runs.
Nikki Prasad was the leading wicket-taker for India with two scalps, while Kranti Goud, Nandani Sharma, Deepti Sharma and Sree Charani picked up one wicket each. Their collective effort ensured that Zimbabwe were unable to establish a commanding position before the Indian batting unit took over.
The emphatic result highlighted India’s superiority in both departments, with the bowlers restricting Zimbabwe to a modest total before the top order completed the chase in spectacular fashion. The speed and authority of the victory also underlined the effectiveness of India’s aggressive batting approach in the shortest format.
Mandhana’s composed leadership and Shafali’s explosive innings proved the defining factors in the contest, as India secured a convincing nine-wicket win with plenty of overs to spare. With both batters in commanding form, the performance provided India with a significant boost in the ongoing T20I series against Zimbabwe.
