Sopore, Sep 13: Residents of Mahrajpora ‘D’ area of Sopore have expressed deep concern over an acute shortage of drinking water, alleging that they have been facing the problem for the past 20 days.
The residents said that the prolonged disruption in water supply has caused considerable hardship to several households in the locality. According to the residents, the Jal Shakti Department has failed to ensure an adequate and regular supply of drinking water to the area despite repeated requests.
They alleged that the concerned officials have not taken effective measures to address the issue, leaving residents to struggle for even basic water requirements.
The residents said that, due to the shortage, they have been forced to use contaminated and unhygienic water for domestic purposes. They expressed concern that continued consumption of such water could pose serious health risks, particularly to children and elderly members of the community.
Residents said that around 12 households were dependent on a single water tap, which supplies water only once every three to four days. They questioned how such an irregular supply could meet the basic needs of all the families dependent on the tap.
“This situation has continued for around 20 days. We have approached the concerned department several times, but our grievance has not been properly addressed,” said a resident, Manzoor Ahmad Lisoo. The residents said the situation has caused immense inconvenience and hardship, forcing families to make alternative arrangements for water.
They also questioned the implementation of the government’s ‘HarGharJal’ initiative, saying that the ground situation in their locality appears contrary to the stated objective of ensuring access to adequate and safe drinking water.
The residents appealed to the government and higher authorities of the Jal Shakti Department, Sopore, to take immediate cognisance of the issue and ensure a regular and adequate supply of clean drinking water to the affected households.
They urged the concerned authorities to resolve the matter on priority so that residents do not have to suffer further due to the prolonged water shortage.
