Srinagar, Sep 26: The J&K government has revealed that 19 schools in the Eidgah constituency of Srinagar district were currently functioning from rented, temporary or other non-permanent accommodation.
The revelation was made in a reply to a question raised by MLA Eidgah Mubarak Gul who sought the details of schools operating from non-permanent buildings, including their locations and the period for which they have been functioning from such premises.
As per the government reply, 19 schools in the Eidgah constituency are presently operating from temporary, non-permanent rented accommodation.
As per the figures the schools operating from rented accommodation since their establishment in 1930s and 1950s.
One such school is Government Girls high school Narwara operating from rented accommodation since 1903, Boys Middle School Safakadal (1955), Boys High school Gassi Muhalla (1965), Boys Middle School Rathpora (1956) and Boys middle school Eidgah is also functioning from rented accommodation since 1961.
Greater Kashmir has earlier reported about the schools operating from rented accommodations. The schools are without permanent buildings due to non-availability of land for the construction of permanent buildings for these schools
As per the government figures, Hamidi Kashmiri Memorial Degree College, Eidgah has an enrollment of only 70 students.
The college, as per the government reply had proposed the introduction of major courses in Political Science, English, Geography and Music following which the proposal was examined in a meeting convened on May 6, 2026, in connection with verification of subjects and finalisation of undergraduate admission intakes for the 2026-27 academic session.
“The proposed subjects are required to be assessed against factors including student demand, availability of faculty, infrastructure, laboratory and library facilities and university affiliation,” the government informed the House.
The government said that while examining the proposal, the college was found to lack the requisite university affiliation for the proposed subjects.
“The institution was consequently advised to obtain the required affiliation before the proposals could be considered further for approval,” the government informed the House.
