JAMMU, OCT 2: BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santosh is scheduled to visit Jammu on Saturday for a series of high-level organisational meetings with the party’s MLAs, office-bearers and senior leadership, with the deliberations expected to focus on organisational strengthening and the evolving political situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to party sources, Santosh will participate in a joint meeting of BJP office-bearers and legislators at the party headquarters in Trikuta Nagar, followed by a meeting of the party’s J&K Core Committee in the evening. Former J&K BJP Prabhari and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh is also expected to accompany Santosh, while newly appointed Seh-Prabhari Reena Kashyap, who is an MLA from Himachal Pradesh, is scheduled to participate in the deliberations.
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, who is a member of the J&K BJP Core Committee, is also scheduled to attend the meetings. The discussions are expected to provide the national leadership with feedback from the state unit on organisational functioning, ongoing programmes and political developments across the Union Territory.
The meetings come at a significant point for the BJP’s J&K unit, following recent changes in its organisational structure. Satish Poonia has been appointed J&K Prabhari and Reena Kashyap Seh-Prabhari, while Ashok Koul recently relinquished the post of General Secretary (Organisation) that he had held since 2012.
The party’s month-long Sewa Sankalp Abhiyan, launched on September 17, is also expected to figure in the organisational review. Leaders are likely to brief the national leadership on activities conducted under the campaign, grassroots outreach and efforts to expand the party’s engagement with different sections of society.
The September 28 J&K Assembly resolution seeking immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood is expected to be another major subject of discussion. The resolution referred to earlier House resolutions of 2000 and 2024, including the 2000 resolution concerning greater autonomy.
The BJP opposed the wording and references contained in the resolution while maintaining, according to Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, that the party supports restoration of statehood but objects to linking the issue with demands concerning the pre-2019 constitutional position.
The issue has subsequently become a prominent point of political debate in J&K. Sunil Sharma has said the resolution could affect relations between the elected UT government and the Centre, while National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has defended the statehood demand and rejected the BJP’s criticism of the Assembly resolution.
Against this backdrop, the Core Committee meeting is expected to provide a platform for senior BJP leaders to assess the party’s legislative role, organisational priorities and approach to major political issues confronting the Union Territory. The deliberations are also likely to cover strengthening the party’s organisational network and coordination between its elected representatives and grassroots cadre.
The visit by the BJP’s national organisational leadership therefore brings together three immediate areas of focus—organisational consolidation, assessment of grassroots programmes and the party’s response to the evolving political debate over J&K’s statehood.
