JAMMU, SEPT 29: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a high-level meeting to review the Draft J&K Hydropower Policy 2026, with emphasis on accelerating the development of the Union Territory’s hydropower resources and strengthening the electricity sector.
Reviewing the performance of the existing policy, the Chief Minister directed that the proposed policy should provide a clear framework for faster harnessing of J&K’s hydropower potential, expansion of power generation capacity and overall strengthening of the power sector.
The Chief Minister stressed that the new policy should facilitate the sustainable development of hydropower resources, while supporting long-term energy security and improving the contribution of the power sector to the region’s economy.
He further emphasised that effective utilisation of the available hydropower potential should contribute not only to increased electricity generation but also to economic growth, infrastructure development and broader regional development across Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting reviewed the existing policy framework and discussed the need for a policy that can support faster development of hydropower projects while maintaining a focus on sustainable and efficient utilisation of natural resources.
The proposed J&K Hydropower Policy 2026 is expected to provide a renewed framework for the sector, with the government seeking to align hydropower development with the UT’s long-term energy requirements and development priorities.
